The Secret Life of Bees

Friday, January 15th, 2010
A moving theme in a largely unmoving film. The book on which it’s based must have been so much bigger. You can laud the beauty of emotional values in a movie endlessly, but most of us just want to be entertained. Emotions in themselves are inside of each of us; a good movie is supposed to take you over, to own you, and so to draw those emotions out. Once there, its emotions are your emotions. “The Secret Life of Bees” did not do that for me. Some of its scenes are gripping, but its general flow is unstimulating. Too much is left in charge of its words, which are not evocative. I found myself pulling and pulling for full-blooded dimension in interactions that seemed to deserve that. Drama, in scene after scene, just doesn’t emanate from the screen except with a few welcome occasions.

It’s 1964 and 14-year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) finds that the weight of her mother’s death and her troubled relationship with her abusive father (Paul Bettany) are just too much. She escapes with housekeeper and caregiver Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) to a South Carolina town. Yet young Lily seeks an understanding of her mother’s past. She is invited to live with the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, wise matriarch August (Queen Latifah), emotionally brittle May (Sophie Okonedo) and willful June (Alicia Keys), a cellist and civil rights activist, where she finds peace of soul and spirit in their enchanting world of beekeeping and honey gathering.

At one point, Rosaleen, a black, attempts to register to vote and is badly beaten by rednecks. This will set off other cruel racist encounters. One will involve a black local boy, Zach (Tristan Wilds) who will be in mutual attraction with Lily.

A seemingly worthwhile serious affair is between strong-headed June and her boyfriend Neil (Nate Parker), but darn, it does not, plot wise, rise off the screen.

Things will climax when Lily’s ornery dad tracks her down and wants her back.

The racial conflicts, always stomach-churning, are nonetheless old hat, unfortunate tragedies from the Deep South which have been dealt with over countless movies. I looked for a variation, a new statement, a new insight, but there was only rehash of a dark American past.

You can respect this movie, but to like it? Mmm . . .

“The Secret Life of Bees” (quality rating: 6 out of 10)

Movies about Dancing are Timeless

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

There are some wonderful movies out there with a theme about dancing. They are timeless in nature even though they have been around for decades. When they are on TV those of us that have already seen them will watch them again and again. Those that are seeing them for the first time will be very impressed with them. There is just something magical about dancing that reels us in and gets out blood pumping faster!

Dirty Dancing is a movie with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray. The story involves a determined young lady with all of the perks in life and her family going to a summer retreat where music and dancing are part of the program. She then meets the character of Swayze named Johnny who teaches dance.

She realizes that many people don’t have life as easy as her and she is willing to stand up for the ways in which they have been wronged. Of course this comes at the expense of her family being disappointed with some of her choices.

The movie has plenty of great dance moves for all of us to pick up on. It also have some great segments where Gray is trying to learn the right moves and we can all appreciate how trying those types of efforts can be for us. Of course Dirty Dancing is also a love story that everyone loves with the guy getting his girl in the end.

Who can forget the 80’s dance movie Footloose with Kevin Bacon? The theme song by Kenny Loggins is still played all the time on the radio and at dances. This movie involves a young man moving to a new location where his aunt and uncle are from. He stands out due to his loud music and his love for dancing. There is no dancing in that town as it was banned by the Reverend.

Footloose is also a great love story for the younger people to appreciate as well as about learning to stand up for yourself when you are struggling to fit in. There are rumors that Footloose is being remade though with Zack Effron from High School Musical stepping into that lead role. Only time will tell if this project is real or just one myth circulating on the internet.

Flashdance is another great hit movie with inspiring dancers doing all that they can in order to make that dream they have a reality. It gives you an insight into the fact that being a talented dancer isn’t always easy. There are many sacrifices to be made along the way. It also shows that there is plenty of hard work and dedication that goes into it. Professional dancers don’t just wake up one day with all the right moves to make it happen. Instead they have to be creative, take risks, and continue to work to make it all look like it should out there.

No mention of movies with dancing would be complete though if we didn’t bring some of John Travolta’s roles into the picture. In both Saturday Night Fever and Grease he shows us some amazing dance moves that have made him famous again and again. While most of his roles now don’t involve dancing it is often what we think of when we see this great performer.

Some of the best moves of the disco era came from Saturday Night Fever and some of you reading this even have a smile on your face as you recall doing those moves yourself back then. Even though the styles of dancing are varied in these movies, they are all timeless icons that you just can’t help but be drawn in by.

Diving into Dreamland – Underwater Theme Bedrooms

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
If your child has fantasies of living “under the sea” you can transform their bedroom into an underwater themed wonderland that will have them swimming through dreamland and sleeping deep in the oceanic depths.

The Ocean Bed

No underwater themed bedroom would be complete without an underwater themed bed as its centerpiece. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Some suggestions include:
a plush oyster shell bed a sunken pirate ship bed a starfish bed an Atlantian castle bed a submarine bed

Painting Ideas for Completing the Underwater Fantasy

It probably seems obvious that you would start off decorating your walls with a blue base. But you can also experiment with different shades of blue to add texture and depth to the watery wall décor.

From there, you can paint, stencil, or hang pictures of starfish, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, sea urchins, and other water-dwelling animals. Beyond that, you can also expand on the magical aspect of this fantasy theme room by painting, stenciling, or hanging pictures of mermaids, sunken ships, buried treasure and other fantastic underwater elements.

Alternatively you can start off painting your child’s underwater themed bedroom with an initial layer of magnetic paint. Then, after you paint the blue ocean over it, you can then decorating the walls with fish magnets and other underwater themed magnets, the benefit of this being that your child can then move them around and change the appearance of their underwater scene at will.

The Accessory that Adds Life to an Underwater Themed Bedroom

The singular accessory that adds the most life to any underwater themed bedroom is an aquarium. Real fish, coral, and underwater plant-life add that splash of authenticity that makes your child really feel like they’re living in their own private Atlantis. Not only that, but as your child grows up, caring for the fish in an aquarium will teach them a sense of responsibility.

Fun on the Ocean Floor

For the floor of your underwater themed childs bedroom you can purchase several bath mats in the shape of fish and scatter them about. Not only does this extend the underwater fantasy theme to the very ocean floor of your child’s underwater themed bedroom, but it’s also an excellent safety measure, providing skid resistant protection to your active child’s bedroom floor.

Completing the Underwater Scene

Finally, a few tips for making the underwater fantasy complete:

use lots of subdued lighting fixtures rather than just one or two bright ones, complimenting the subdued and soothing tones of the oceanic depths decorate furniture with paints and fabrics that add to the effect, making them look like coral, seaweed, or ocean friends like whales and dolphins put a few leafy green plants in the room to add an extra touch of ocean life

Follow the suggestions above and your child will spend every day and night submerged in his or her own underwater adventure.

Setting Goals, Intentions and Themes for the New Year

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
I woke up on New Year’s Day with a happy, optimistic heart and a mind focused on the future. What kind of year will I make 2007? I love the rollover from one year to the next because it is as if the slate is wiped clean and I can begin anew to build the year that I want.

Join me now in adopting the working proposition that you are completely responsible for the quality of your own experience in the year ahead. Revel in the idea that you get to make it up and build it out. At times, you may have felt at the mercy of circumstances outside of your control in 2006; however, you always get to choose how you respond. If you want to feel powerful, take time now to identify your intentions and goals, as well as your theme for 2007.

So let’s explore each of these techniques and how they work:

Intentions

Your intentions could be defined as “what you intend to create this year”. For example, this year my family is building a second home in Granada, Nicaragua. We intend to build a colonial-style home with modern amenities that will be ready for us to visit in August on vacation. Here are some other examples of intentions:

A well-functioning team or department that regularly achieves its goals
A new job in a new industry that comes with a good paycheck and high satisfaction
An advanced degree in my field that increases my credibility with customers
A new program or book that is published by a reputable publisher

Goals

The goals you set are the targets you must meet to fulfill your intentions. Goals should specify clearly what measurable results you plan to reach. When setting goals, use the STAR model:
Specific
Time-bound
Assessable
Results-based (not activity-based)A specific goal clearly describes the target so there is no room for interpretation or disagreement at the end of the year. A time-bound goal clearly describes the end-date or frequency required. An assessable goal provides the necessary measurements to gauge what success looks like. A results-based goal focuses more on outcomes than activities. Let’s look at some examples of STAR goals:
To ensure produce/service errors are reduced by 25% by the end of second quarter
To identify and research 40 prospective companies, resulting in 8 job interviews and 2 job offers before year end
To complete my master’s degree in Organization Development by July 2008
To write a solid, well-research first draft of the first five chapters of my new book by May 2007

Theme

The theme you set for the year is defined as “what you would like to experience or feel” on the road to accomplishing your goals and fulfilling your intentions. If you’re saying to yourself, “I don’t need a theme—how hokey,” let me suggest that you have probably lived out your theme without conscious awareness. Reflect on your past year: Was it full of struggle and disappointment? Or was it full of unexpected and welcome surprises? Did you find yourself in love with your life? Or did you find yourself longing for change? Did you tell yourself that whatever you accomplished, it just wasn’t good enough? Or did you feel grateful appreciation for the support you received from others? As you can see, there are many possible themes in a life.

The truth is your family, friends, and co-workers can probably tell you what your theme was because they’ve heard you talk about your experience all year! If you doubt the reality of that statement, list four colleagues on the left-hand side of piece of paper, and see if you can identify their themes on the right-hand side. See what I mean?

So, what is the quality of experience that you would like to have in 2007? I set my theme this year as A Grateful Heart. I want to experience gratitude daily. I want to spend my time appreciating every good act taken by others on my behalf. I want to notice everything that is working well in my business, my family and my life. Here are more examples of themes:

Productive and Joyous
Enthusiastically Taking Action
Ease and Grace Defines Me
Always Expanding and Growing
Grateful and Appreciative
Delightfully Surprised All Year

Guess what? I didn’t accomplish every goal I set for 2006. However, my theme for the year defined my experience and I had a great year! I invite you to create a great 2007 using these techniques. Write it all down and revisit your Theme, Intentions, and Goals during the year. You’ll be amazed at the power you have to create the life and work you want.

How to Choose Bathroom Accessories That Fit Your Bathroom’s Theme

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
If you feel like your bathrooms a bit of a dud and then you share the same feeling with countless other people who consider their bathrooms to be nothing but a non-important room in the house. How about re-decorating it and turning it into something more than just a mere room of fixtures and tile? All you need is a great imagination and a few bathroom accessories to bring it to life.

Bathrooms are just like all the rooms in your home and as such it should also follow a theme. Having a themed bathroom would give the dull space some mood and adds a little of your personality in this mostly tucked away part of your home. Bathroom accessories can drastically change the feel of a bathroom and to give it more effect, add accessories according to your theme. Be playful and creative! You can give all sorts of themes; Country, European, Tropical and you can even go all out and create a Pirate theme or a Dollhouse theme. It’s all up to you.

Next up, you would have to decide a color scheme. Make sure that you choose one that best suites the chosen theme and brings out the beauty in your chosen bathroom accessories. Colors that are too overpowering can end up making your space seems smaller and eventually more cluttered. So choose well. Since we’re on the talk of small bathrooms, if you have a small one, color can either be your foe or best friend. You cannot put too much bathroom accessories as that could potentially clutter up your space. Instead, bring the theme to life through the use of paint or even wall paper. Choose one neutral color which would be the dominant color and then pick an accent color. The accent color would be use on the railings and panels.

Lighting is also a vital factor in creating a nice atmosphere for your bathroom. Safety should be your priority because as well all know water and electricity don’t mix together. If you have a wide sink or bathroom cabinet, you can use a small lamp there. If you have a small bathroom lighting can also create the illusion of space. Use a warm toned light to enhance the bathroom’s features. Adding a mirror would also help create an illusion of space.

Other bathroom accessories that could add to you bathrooms theme are the fixings such as the towel rack and holders. You can also add candles and even incense to make it a more relaxing sanctuary. To help you get inspired, leaf through decorating books and magazines. See which styles are in trend and which ones would be perfect for your bathroom size. Remember that balance is key so make sure that the proportions of your bathroom accessories are perfect for the size of your space. You don’t have to sacrifice aesthetic beauty just because you want more function. The two can blend beautifully together with a few tricks and some smartly placed bathroom accessories. So the next time you go out and buy décor, don’t forget your bathroom as this is a special place that needs some improvement too.

Managing Health Care-health

Monday, January 11th, 2010

A major theme throughout this text is that you can control many factors that influence your health. An outgrowth of this attitude is the self-care movement, which is the trend toward individuals taking increased responsibility for prevention or management of certain health conditions. Armed with correct information, you can manage many aspects of your health care that were once thought possible only with the help of a physician.

Answers to the following questions provide clues to the use of health-care services, providers, and products and facilitate the self-care approach to wellness:

When should you seek health care?

What can you expect from a stay in the hospital?

How can you select a health-care professional?

When To Seek Health Care

Many people tend to fall into two extreme groups regarding health care: those who seek health care for every ache and pain and those who avoid health care unless experiencing extreme pain. Both groups unwisely use the health-care establishment. Those in the first group fail to understand that too much health care can be ineffective or even harmful. They also fail to recognize the powerful recuperative powers of the body. An estimated 80% of patients who seek medical care are unaffected by treatment, 10% get better, and 9% experience an nitrogen condition in which they get worse because of the medical treatment. Those in the latter group fail to recognize the value of early diagnosis and detection of disease. This is especially true for men; 30% of men have not been to a doctor in a year or more, one-third have never had their cholesterol checked, and three fourths have not been checked for prostate cancer during the previous year.

Perhaps the best way to find a balance between too much and too little health care is to establish a physician-patient relationship with a general practitioner. The general practitioner may be a family practice physician or an internist who specializes in internal medicine.

It is important to visit your doctor while in good health. This permits your doctor to serve as a facilitator of wellness and provides a benchmark for interpreting symptoms when they occur.

A second important way to balance health care is to trust your instincts. Nobody knows when some thing is wrong with your body better than you do. Health and illness are subject to a wide variation in interpretation. If you are attuned to your body, you are your own best expert for recognizing signs and symptoms of illness.

Several signs and symptoms warrant medical attention without question. Internal bleeding, such as blood in urine, bowel movement, sputum, or vomit, or blood from any of the body’s openings requires immediate attention. Abdominal pain, especially when it is associated with nausea, may indicate a wide range of problems from appendicitis to pelvic inflammatory disease and requires the diagnostic expertise of a physician. A stiff neck when accompanied by a fever may suggest meningitis and justifies immediate medical intervention. Injuries, many first aid emergencies, and severe disabling symptoms require prompt medical care.

There is debate as to when medical care is needed in the case of fever. An elevated temperature may be a sign that the body’s immune system is responding to an infection and working to destroy pathogens, or disease-producing organisms. On the other hand, if left untreated for an extended time, a fever may cause harm to sensitive tissues in the body, such as connective tissue found in joints and tissues in the valves of the heart.

The normal body temperature of 98.6° F was studied at the University of Maryland. Findings involving 700 temperature readings of 148 adults over a 3-day period suggest that the normal body temperature is 98.9° F. The study attributed the difference to less accurate techniques when the earlier standard of 98.6° F was established. Body temperature varies with exercise, rest, climate, and gender. Fever means a reading over 99° F. It is not usually necessary for an adult to seek medical care for a fever. Home treatment in the form of aspirin, acetaminophen, and sponge baths usually lowers fever. You should consult your physician if fever remains above 102 0 F despite your actions or, in the case of a low-grade fever (99 0 to 100 0 F), if there is no improvement in 72 hours. You should consult a physician if fever lasts more than 5 days, regardless of improvement. Symptoms, such as sore throat, ear pain, diarrhea, urinary problems, and skin rash, may be the cause of the fever and should be treated as such. Fever in young children should be discussed with a physician.
